How To Start Seeds Indoors

Starting seeds indoors is a simple way to prepare for a productive growing season. It gives young plants a protected space before they move into larger pots, raised beds, balconies, or outdoor garden areas.

Begin with a clean seed tray or starter container. Fill each cell with light, well-draining seed-starting mix. Avoid packing the soil too tightly, as young roots need space to grow. Place seeds according to the depth suggested on the seed packet, then gently cover them with soil.

After planting, water lightly. The goal is to keep the soil evenly moist, not soaked. A spray bottle or gentle watering tool works well for delicate seeds. Place the tray in a warm location with steady light. If natural sunlight is limited, a plant light may help seedlings grow more evenly.

Check the tray daily. Once seedlings appear, continue giving them light, airflow, and careful watering. When they develop several strong leaves, they can gradually adjust to outdoor conditions before transplanting.
